# BSL(Business Source License)

[MariaDB Corporation](https://staging-mdb.com/), [MariaDB Foundation](https://mariadb.org) で開発されている MariaDB 製品のほとんどは [GPL v2.0](https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.ja.html) もしくは [LGPL 2.1](https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/lgpl-2.1.ja.html)でライセンスされていますが，一部の MariaDB Corporation 製品は MariaDB Corporation によって提唱されている [BSL(Business Source License)](https://staging-mdb.com/bsl11/) でライセンスされています。  
英語のライセンス条項では理解しにくい箇所もありますので，今回の記事で解説を行いたいと思います。

### BSLとは

BSLとは時限つきのGPLで，例えば MariaDB MaxScale 2.3 の場合，ライセンス条項は下記URLで確認いただけます。

Parameters 項に着目しますと，以下のように記載されています。

“Business Source License” is a trademark of MariaDB Corporation Ab.

Licensor:             MariaDB Corporation Ab
Licensed Work:        MariaDB MaxScale (TM) v.2.3.
                      The Licensed Work is (c) 2017 MariaDB Corporation Ab
Additional Use Grant: You may use the Licensed Work when your application
                      uses the Licensed Work with a total of less than three
                      server instances for any purpose.

Change Date:          2022-01-01

Change License:       Version 2 or later of the GNU General Public License as
                      published by the Free Software Foundation.

まとめますと，

- MariaDB Server, MariaDB ColumnStore インスタンス数が3未満の場合はいかなる目的にも利用可能
- MaxScale 2.3 のライセンスは 2022年1月1日に GPL v2 に移行

ここで，サーバ数(three servers)ではなく，インスタンス数(three server instances)で記載されているのは，仮想マシンやコンテナとして運用する場合，1台のサーバ上で複数 mysqld プロセスを運用される場合もあるためです。

例えば以下のような最小構成は production 環境でも無料で利用可能で，MaxScale サブスクリプションを購入頂く必要はありません。

- MaxScale 1インスタンス
- MariaDB Server Primary 1インスタンス
- MariaDB Server Replica 1インスタンス

また，テスト/ステージング環境において特にインスタンス数制限はありません。

基本的に MaxScale, MariaDB ColumnStore Tools(Backup &amp; Restore)は MariaDB Platform X3/X4 サブスクリプションに含まれておりますので，サブスクリプションをご購入されていれば，MaxScale や ColumnStore Tools を別途追加購入頂く必要はありません。
